Modesitt, Jr. (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE) is the 2nd novel in his Saga of Recluce series of high fantasy novels set in the eponymous magical world, this installment a personal adventure epic starring a man who has an eventful life which becomes even more eventful when he marries a witch and together, they try to change their world, free courtesy of publisher Tor Books.

Apparently the novels in this series are all standalones written in a non-chronological order, though according to the series' Wikipedia page, the author recommends reading them in published order. Incidentally, the 1st-in-series novel, The Magic of Recluce, has been for the past few weeks and for the moment currently still is a $2.99 special from Tor, which may account for why the 2nd novel is December's freebie.
