what is 'Page Setup' (Calibre)

Having trouble understanding what Page Setup is in Calibre's conversion settings. I thought the nature of EPUB and MOBI was that there was no inherent page setup and that the text simply conforms to the device. Furthermore, Generic e-ink and Default Output Profile both sound very similar, both in their titles and their descriptions.

The Output profile is used during calibre conversions to scale down images to a size the device's screen can display. If you want to make sure images aren't rescaled always choose the Tablet setting.

So anything other than Tablet permanently changes the size of images?

If the images are larger then the size specified for the output profile, then on conversion, they will be reduced. Using Tablet as the output profile, no images get reduced no matter the size.

Don't images get resized by the device anyway? What's the point of permanently resizing them?

Traditionally this has been done to reduce the storage requirement for books on the device. As device have got more storage space as standard this has become less important.

I guess on older devices there was also a potential performance advantage if the system did not have to do dynamic resizing of images. However I suspect the gain there was always marginal.

Almost every device or android epub reader app I've used supports some method of viewing & zooming high resolution images. This is especially important for images with text, such as maps, on a small screen device. So I also have the output profile set to tablet.

So why is Calibre set to ruin peoples' books by default?

The output profiles are relatively worthless these days. If you set yourself to Kindle and you have a Voyage, your images get resized for 800x600 and that won't work all that well on the high resolution screen. This is why it's best to set the output profile to Tablet as that's the one that doesn't resize any of the graphics.
