It's not in the published text of Golden Beeches, which appears to quote the note in full.

Violet probably wrote the date on the outside of the triple-folded note, above the name and address Demonstrates the fallacy of seeking authenticity, you'll never get it right - leave it to the readers imagination.

But it's fun to play with if it's just for oneself and one learns something in doing it. And it makes a change from disgusting the tortured syntaxes of xhtml, regex et al

Can't speak to the Golden ones, but in all the copies of The Adventure of the COPPER Beeches () I can find, Watson's line right before the quoted text of the letter reads:

"It was dated from Montague Place upon the preceding evening, and ran thus: "

Yeah, I know some people are REALLY into the authenticity of stuff like that. Anything that seems like it has a passable British accent passes muster for me. I wouldn't know Victorian from Edwardian.

With the decline in the price of Copper I may have subconsciously decided to upgrade it to Gold. But it's more likely that the shimmering golden beaches of Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte are more front of mind than a miserably wet English autumn
