Since you are obviously knowledgeable about just what breaks in v5 firmware, please enlighten the rest of us. A quick list of the top bugs in v5 would be much appreciated.

KoboRoot.tgz does not work to install stuff.

But in another thread, it's said being sorted. So It's now a matter of waiting until it's official and fixed.

Of course, not. Tolino ereaders have never used KoboRoot.tgz and the current v5.0 code is for installing on Tolinos. Copy update.zip to the root directory is the Tolino equivalent of copy KoboRoot.tgz to the .kobo directory.

That's hardly the list of items breaking that I asked for. You did say that "it breaks too many things" and I asked for a list of those things.

I would suggest that you either supply your list of multiple items that break or be quiet on the topic until you have something useful to share with the community.

as a tolino color user now, there are some problems:
- the software it not completely finished, you can still see place with default QT window style
- the dictionary have some sorting problem
- the new webbrowser with its new UA completely break the ability to download loaned books from Onleihe or Overdrive.( I know in the dev mode I can change the UA back to Vision 6 , but Overdrive is still broken
- you cannot log in to your Adobe ID and change your book store easily in settings
- so many crashes, for example when searching a book in the store with multiple pages

When I change to Kobo, the system stability is even worse, with visually unfinished UI in book shelf and it even crashed during setting it up. So I immediately switch back to tolino (note switching will delete all your data.

Probably the update.zip way as Linux and MacOS have .kobo invisible by default.

Enough with the speculation on Tolino updates, these are my notes on how they work in all Kobo firmware versions: https://github.com/pgaskin/koboutils...package.go#L34.

Is Tolino acting as a beta tester for Kobo or what?!

I will surely wait for feedback before installing that v5 firmware.

Kobo owns the Tolino hardware end and I suspect that they are attempting to merge the two sets of firmware into one unified package. Most of the newer Tolino and Kobo ereaders are using the same hardware but Tolino FW was Android based while Kobo FW was Linux based. Using a single platform for both would likely be a cost saving measure.

The tar can be compressed with anything supported. If you have a tgz, it must be named tar. If it doesn't have a driver.sh, it doesn't do anything.

tgz named tar? Sorry, I'm going to cry in a corner (for me, tgz is always gzip over tar, zcvf...).

AFAIK, Android (core) is also Linux based. So this is a replacement of one *nix system with another *nix system.

Yes indeed. A tar (Tape Archive) file can be zipped (compressed) using for instance gzip (Gnu Zip application) to create a so-called "tarball", identified via the extension .tgz
