Show me one place on the B&N website that says any information on ePub that's needed for the customer to make a properly informed decision? Nobody has yet done so. What B&N has on their website is not going to help people (who do not know about this DRM stuff) to make a properly informed decision to buy or not to buy. That is the problem. If B&N had put something like "The ePub purchased here uses a different DRM then other stores" that would be OK.
I think B&N makes it clear about the eBooks it sells and what they will work on. If you click on "Learn More" next the eBook being sold you get the following.

eBooks, also known as electronic books, are the digital equivalent of printed books. Barnes & Noble eBooks can be read on the iPhone/iTouch, Blackberry, or PC and Mac computers. Please check back for an expanded list of other supported devices.
While this does not mention ePub or DRM it does state what the books will work on. If anyone purchasing a book from B&N for their unsupported reader well that's their own fault by not doing enough research.

The very first thing you read is...

eBooks — Works with the eReader you already own
And if you take "eReader" to mean electronic reader, then it's even more unclear. I have a 505 that supports ADE/ePub. So if I didn't know, I might buy if the sample was ePub.

Face it, B&N is not telling the customers what they need to know. And they are mixing up the word eReader and causing no end of confusion.

Yes and it shows a picture of an iPhone, Blackberry, Mac and PC. Now if it showed a picture of a Sony, Kindle, Cybook, ect. there would be problems.

Next we'll be arguing syntax and what an eReader is.

I think we've kinda been through all this a couple of times, how 'bout we let history sort it out.

Maybe we should all send emails to B&N, Sony, Adobe etc. Just to express our opinions.

And when you see a PC & MAC, you do think ADE because of ePub and DRM. So that's not good.

Part of the problem is that B&N is using eReader in different meanings. They have it meaning eReader the eBook format and eReader as electronic reader. So tat doesn't help one bit.

No, I don't.

See, that's the problem with all of the arguments on all sides of this. Everyone assumes that their perspective and their context is also everyone else's. To the vast majority of B&N's audience, which is customers who have little to no idea about e-books, it's perfectly clear. To the small existing e-book buying market--specifically the US e-book buying market--it can be confusing (but not necessarily), because the market is in flux.

Most likely, in six months most of the other players will have upgraded to the new SDK and all the confusion will magically vanish. In the long term, it's good for the market; in the short term, it's a pain--sort of like gall bladder surgery.

I do think this is a lot confusing to the eBook buyers who have a reader and have leaned about ADE/ePub. I do agree that eventually this can be sorted if all the readers with ADE take on board the new SDK.
