Achilles and Petroclus might arguably fit the description. But you're right - Don Quixote is a perfect example.

I was thinking about the plots rather than the characters. Thorndyke had a number of sidekicks, and Polton played a far more important role than Mrs Polton.
And both were set in an age where domestic service was far more common than it is now. There was also Poirot and Hastings. TV producers found it necessary to include Hastings in every story, although he only appeared in a few books. |

Thanks so much for doing this...
I had read of Austin Freeman in one of Raymond Chandler's essays about detective stories (he liked his work). But I had never been able to find him in a library or such, and rather expensive on Amazon for physical copies. |

Regarding this interesting discussion of heroes and their sidekicks in literature, great reference to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, GA Russell, and to the VERY early Achilles and Petroclus, Harry T! In my literature classes, the earliest dynamic duo we can come up with is found in the earliest textual story known: Gilgamesh and Enkidu, originating perhaps more than 4000 years ago. This ancient Sumerian epic was "discovered" in 1853 and translated and published in 1870 by George Smith--so given Freeman's interest in incunabula, he may very well have been aware of Gilgamesh. On the other hand, such partnerships are so common all through literature that for Dr. Thorndyke NOT to have such a companion might have been strange.

Completely proof-read Vol 7 and corrected several hundred errors. This book is still missing the essay "5A King's Bench Walk", but is now otherwise complete. Please let me know if you find any remaining errors in this, or, indeed, any of the other volumes.

Actually I've heard that "The Tale of Genji" is the 1st novel as such. It's present form was completed around 1021 and the 1st part of Don Quixote didn't see publication til 1605. So Genji predates Quixote by 584 years.

Hello HarryT,
I was wondering if your omnibus contained the short story "The Dead Hand." If so which Volume is it contained in? Thank you, Stefan |
