True, it's not in his budget. That's why I hadn't commented until he compared it to a tablet of the same price.
The point is to know what you want. I think it's great that a person wants an e-reader to read novels, and that they use a tablet to read comics and PDFs and a computer to manage their e-reader library. I have no objection to that. Just as if he wants to read all his e-books on a tablet, smartphone or computer. I think that's wonderful. But I think we all know what we mean when we talk about a colour "e-reader" and it's not exactly that kind of device. |

With the same brightness, light reflected from non-mirroring objects is always less harmful than looking directly into the (maybe color-filtered) light source.

Don't stare at light bulbs, high power LEDs for torches*, lasers or the sun, but no OLED or LCD tablet is on sale that can damage your eyes. Also some are not any brighter than the front light of an eink at full (which is pretty much the same LEDs as on an LCD backlight). (* They have "don't point this at your eyes" or similar warnings) |

(iPad mini)
That is incorrect. It's not worth trying to read on one in unshaded sunlight, but any reasonably solid shade or indoor situation it is fine. This is not a restriction that has ever had any meaning for me (it's a health hazard to sit for any length of time in direct sunlight in my area). The OP is on a very tight budget for a colour device. Sometimes compromises are necessary. Now they're aware of the options. |

Aha - so only weirdos get headaches and cramps when they look directly into such light sources while reflected light doesn't bother them.
Or what - haven't you heard of it yet? Or does that not fit into your worldview? |

An eInk screen is not the only light source that's not a bother. Turn up the front light too bright and an eInk Reader is a bother. |
