In ten years from now? If there's a good enough screen technology, I see ereaders converging with tablets. But until there's a bright, low power, sunlight-readable tablet display, I think we'll still have ereaders. |

My hope is that ereaders in 10 years will be a lot like they are today. The point of an ereader is reading books and these devices are perfect for that.
I guess the one thing I do hope changes is that ereaders are no longer proprietary devices from book sellers, but that companies can compete to give us more variety in size and type and that they'll all read any books we happen to buy, DRM or not. Barry |

Will I be able to take one almost anywhere in the world, and, in a pinch, send an email -- as I can do with my Kindle Keyboard today? I'm guessing no -- Amazon will turn that off at some point and/or the cell phone networks will no longer support the hardware. Will what I consider the killer eInk app in the United States still be available then? I'm again guessing -- No. Will new books still load on the old readers? Maybe. In the eInk Kindle world, it depends on Amazon support decisions. Quote:
I've predicted before that paper books would be replaced by single-title readers much cheaper to produce than a hardback. People here don't like that idea. Whether it happens may depends less on whether people like the idea, and more on whether techniques to manufacture a book like I describe, extremely cheaply, are actually invented. |

Even things like the fact that ereaders have WiFi, but rarely Bluetooth and that tablets universally have both doesn't count since the radio chips available today have both. New devices today that have WiFi will all have a Bluetooth radio even if the software/firmware doesn't use it. It's the same chip either way so its the same reliablility. |

Well, a little over 10 years ago, this was what was being discussed as the future of e-readers:

Isn't that what they were saying five years ago? You may be right, I don't know. I hope not. I don't like LCD screens for reading.

Agreed. I think Microsoft's failure to sell the concept of the same version of Windows on all devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone) highlights the fact that different devices are used for different purposes. I think tablets will be the "odd man out," in a few years, not a niche product like eReaders.

It's not the guts that matter. It's the weight, type of screen and size that matters. And this is where a tablet and eReader still diverge. And I don't see that changing any time soon.

Overall, I don't think ereaders will change all that much in the future. They've pretty much reached a point where they are much lighter than books. The lighting could improve, but the screen is already great. With the addition of more graduated font sizes, it's pretty darn perfect for that. I would hope there would be improvements in book organization.
