Lighting a candle for my father-in-law, Jim.

He passed away in his sleep last Saturday after a fall left him with a broken hip. Clear of mind and living independently to the end, Jim was only weeks away from his 92nd birthday. Family was able to visit and speak with him on the Friday night.

A very peaceful end to a long and fascinating life.

One of my cats, Ruufi, died unexpectedly yesterday. He was in the clinic for health check because he developed a slight cough a few weeks ago. Suddenly he had an attack during an examination, started to pant, developed hypoxia and finally cardiac arrest. The doctors did everything to revive him, he was given oxygen, medications etc, but nothing helped. Afterwards it was found his heart had been seriously damaged.

Ruufi's death came as a shock. He was old, but still lively and there was no sign that something was wrong with his heart (apart from the recent cough, which didn't seem serious at all). Certainly I didn't expect him to die so suddenly, just during a health check. But these things happen. I guess it was an easier way to go than to die from a protracted illness...

We miss you, Ruufi.
