start calibre once only locally, and put it in the system tray (Preferences->look & feel->enable system tray icon). Then when you log in remotely, access it from the system tray only. That will ensure you have only a single instance running.

Launch the server from the CLI, not calibre (at startup)
It does not show as a separate windows task if done from the GUI, which is possibly why that command does not work. |
