The poster has a Nook and may like direct downloading. Moreover, B&N has an affinity program and a membership rewards program, which provide kickbacks/discounts. And, there are benefits to being able to use a Nook inside a store. Some like to support a bricks and mortar business. Gift cards can be used for both digital and physical purchases.

Presumably they do it here because it's effective, i.e., savings are greater than the costs of "shrinkage." Unfortunately, it seems as if in this case the seller doesn't allow for shrinkage.
