March 25th is Lady Day (the Catholic Feast of the Annunciation), and was the traditional beginning of the new year in England prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. Since Tolkein thought of Middle Earth as being a sort of mythical prehistory for England, it's probably not surprising that he picked that date for the destruction of the One Ring and subsequent beginning of the Fourth Age.
