I think you're conflating DRM with copy protection. All DRM is copy protection, but not all copy protection is DRM.

To stifle competition. The way they want us to see it, you didn't buy that Kindle reader, you bought a license to use it. Similarly, you didn't buy those books, you bought licenses to read them on Amazon-approved devices and software. Having an onerous, proprietary tool to let us make our own KFX files lets them get away with locking out competition without appearing to be a monopoly: "We're not locking out customers. See? They can convert anything they want to read on their Kindle."
